Crossdressing for Beginners

The short answer

Start with privacy, then measure yourself (bust, waist, hips and foot) so you can buy the right women's sizes. Begin with one forgiving outfit, simple shapewear and low heels, practice at home, and add makeup and a wig when you are ready. Go at your own pace; there is no right speed.

Start with privacy

Before you buy anything, decide who can know and plan around it. Simple habits protect you:

  • Use a separate email address and a pen name for shopping and communities.
  • Have orders delivered where you are comfortable receiving them, and check whether the store ships in plain packaging.
  • Keep photos off shared cloud albums, and strip location data before posting any.
  • Store clothes somewhere you control — a locked case or a drawer that is only yours.

Take your measurements

Women’s sizes are not men’s sizes, and guessing is the most common first mistake. You need four numbers, measured over thin underwear with a soft tape:

  • Bust — around the fullest part of your chest. If you will wear breast forms, measure while wearing them.
  • Waist — around your natural waist, the narrowest point above your belly button.
  • Hips — around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
  • Foot length — heel to longest toe, standing, in inches or centimeters.

Then use our size guide to turn those numbers into women’s sizes.

What to buy first

Start small. One complete outfit you love teaches you more than a closet of things that almost fit.

  • Underwear and hosiery — panties and tights are inexpensive, easy to size and a gentle first step.
  • A forgiving dress or skirt — stretch fabrics such as jersey and A-line or wrap shapes suit most bodies.
  • Shapewear — a cincher or padded panty adds curves and helps clothes hang the way they do on the model.
  • A bra and forms — optional at first, but they change how tops fit. Bra band size follows your ribcage measurement.
  • Shoes — begin with flats or a low block heel. High heels take practice.

Where to shop

Large online retailers with free returns are the easiest place to start, because you can try things at home and send back what does not fit. Stores that serve crossdressers often list men’s-to-women’s sizing and ship discreetly. For shoes in larger sizes, look for ranges that go to women’s US 12–15 or wide fittings.

Makeup and hair basics

Keep the first routine short:

  1. Shave closely just before you start.
  2. Use a color corrector (peach or orange) to cancel beard shadow, then a full-coverage foundation.
  3. Set it with powder so it lasts.
  4. Add mascara, a soft blush and a lip color you like.

A wig makes the biggest single difference to how you look. A shoulder-length synthetic wig with bangs is a forgiving first choice: it frames the face and needs little styling.

Practice at home first

Give yourself time. Walk in your shoes around the house, try different outfits, and take photos to see what works. Many people spend months dressing at home before they think about going out — and some never want to, which is fine.

Common questions

How do I find my women’s dress size?

Measure your bust, waist and hips, then match the largest of the three on a women’s size chart. Our size guide has a chart and worked examples.

What size women’s shoe do I wear?

In U.S. sizes, women’s is usually about 1.5 sizes larger than men’s, so a men’s 10 is roughly a women’s 11.5. Check the store’s own chart, especially for width.

Do I need breast forms?

No, but they help tops and dresses fit as designed. A padded bra is a simple, inexpensive place to start.

How can I order clothes discreetly?

Use a separate email, choose stores that ship in plain packaging, and pick a delivery address and time you are comfortable with.
