My time… your time

I guess I never thought of it as my time… or as yours.
I always thought our time’s just here for keeping track of things.
How could I know it belonged to you… and it never belonged to me?
When you told me that I had wasted your time…?
I felt how lost time stings.

I thought our time just rolled along, until that day that our time stopped.
(Did the clocks not chime? Did the hands not move when our time ticked its last?)
What’s happened to our future—and to all those plans we made?
What happened to those dreams we shared in those moments
… so long past?

“Time has come to move along.” You said without a smile.
I never knew our moving schedule. I never knew our love’s span.
Then you added, “Don’t be so sad… It’s just time for us to change.”
…And I realized the plan.

Time can’t be your manipulative… to use when needed, like… a friend.
It’s just a way to track two lives…
from our beginning…
…to our end.
